Self-Assessment Tax Return FAQs

What is a self-assessment tax return?

A self-assessment tax return is a form used by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to collect information about your income, expenses, and any other relevant financial details. If you are self-employed, a company director, or earn income not taxed at source, you are required to complete a self-assessment tax return to determine how much tax you owe.
The deadline for submitting your online self-assessment tax return is 31st January following the end of the tax year. For paper returns, the deadline is 31st October. If you miss the deadline, you may face penalties and interest on any unpaid tax.

If you are required to file a self-assessment tax return and fail to do so, you may face penalties from HMRC. These can include a fixed penalty of £100, additional fines if the return is late, and interest on any tax owed. In severe cases, further legal action may be taken.

If you make a mistake on your self-assessment tax return, you can amend it within 12 months of the original deadline. It’s important to correct any errors as soon as possible to avoid potential fines or paying the wrong amount of tax.
